Looking for fast and interesting facts about the Mary Rose? Check out these fast, interesting, important and even little known facts about the famous Tudor warship which was sunk in 1545 and rediscovered hundreds of years later:

  • Fact 1 - The warship served England during the naval Battle of St Mathieu and the Battle of the Solent where she she was sunk in 1545
  • Fact 2 - The Mary Rose was built between 1509 & 1511 as the first English gunship
  • Fact 3 - The crew consisted of 185 soldiers and archers, 200 sailors and 30 gunners
  • Fact 4 - The Flagship Commanders of the Mary Rose Warship were:
    • Admiral Sir Edward Howard (1477-1513)
    • Lord High Admiral Sir Thomas Howard (1508-1549)
    • Vice Admiral Sir George Carew ((1504–1545)
  • Fact 5 - Date the warship was rediscovered: 14th May 1966
  • Fact 6 - Date that the hull was raised: 11 October 1982
  • Fact 7 - The lower gunports on the refitted Mary Rose were only 16 inches above the waterline.
  • Fact 8 - The warship had high castle-like structures built on the deck at the bow and stern
  • Fact 9 - The gunports were the flaps that covered holes in the side of the ship
  • Fact 10 - The gunports allowed the guns to fire a 'broadside', which meant all guns along one side of the ship could fire at once
  • Fact 11 - In 1545 the French launched an invasion fleet against the English which led to the shipwreck of the warship
  • Fact 12 - On June 16, 1836 the shipwreck was discovered when a fishing net caught on the wreck
  • Fact 13 - A new search was started by Alexander McKee in 1965 and the shipwreck was rediscovered on 14th May 1966
  • Fact 14 - 20,000 artefacts were recovered from the shipwreck including personal, medical and military artefacts
  • Fact 15 - Over 600 volunteer divers assisted in excavating the Mary Rose shipwreck
  • Fact 16 - The artefacts found on the ship included more than 3,500 arrows and 137 whole longbows
  • Fact 17 - 200 skeletons were found on the Mary Rose. Nearly all of the skeletons were of young men in their twenties with an average height of 5 foot 7 inches
  • Fact 18 - The Mary Rose sank on 19th of July 1545
