Mary Rose Artefacts

Mary Rose Artefacts
The Mary Rose ship was rediscovered on 14th May 1966 and following careful preparation and diving work the hull was lifted from the seabed. During the course of nearly 30,000 dives approximately 20,000 Mary Rose artefacts were recovered. After being lifted off the seabed the Mary Rose warship was placed on a cradle before being raised by a giant floating crane on 11 October 1982 and towed to Portsmouth where the Tudor warship can be seen today at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in South England.

The Mary Rose ship sank in the Solent in 1545 but this left a wonderful treasure trove of Mary Rose artefacts providing an insight into life on a Tudor warship. These artefacts had been locked away in a time capsule of mud. Nearly one whole side of the Mary Rose was completely intact with many artefacts preserved aboard. There were approximately 700 men on board the Mary Rose when she sank of which only 30 survived. These soldiers, sailors and gunners left thousands of personal, medical and military artefacts.

Personal Artefacts
Various chests were found on the Mary Rose containing personal artefacts which provide fascinating information about life on board this famous Tudor ship. The artefacts reflect how the sailors and soldiers spent their leisure time. The personal artefacts found on the Mary Rose include:

  • Benches
  • Tables
  • A backgammon set
  • Dice
  • Quill pens and inkwells
  • Leather book covers
  • Coins - the currency of Tudor times including a half angel and half sovereign
  • Cut throat razors
  • A brass shaving bowl
  • Wooden canisters
  • Jugs
  • Plates
  • Spoons
  • Bowls
  • Barrels
  • Baskets
  • Clothes
  • Armour
  • Shoes
  • Belts and Buckles

Medical Artefacts
The cabin used by the the barber surgeons who served on the Mary Rose was well preserved and contained various Medical artefacts which would have been used on the ship to treat injuries inflicted in battle. Various wooden canisters were found on the Mary Rose containing various ointments. The medical artefacts found on the Mary Rose included:

  • Wooden canisters
  • Ceramic medicine jars
  • Bleeding bowl
  • A small brazier
  • Mortar
  • A bone ear-scoop

Military Artefacts and Weapons
Many military artefacts were found on the Mary Rose including various weapons, guns and cannon. The artefacts reflect the military strength of the seamen and soldiers. The military artefacts found on the Mary Rose included:

  • Armour
  • Bronze muzzle loader guns
  • Iron breech loader guns
  • Wrought iron breech loading swivel guns
  • 50 handguns
  • 250 longbows
  • 300 pole arms
  • 480 darts (which were used as projectiles)
  • 8000 arrows
