The Henry VIII timeline details his date of birth, details of the dates of his marriages to each of his wives. 1494 Prince Henry was created the Duke of York
1501 November 14, 1501 - Catherine of Aragon and Arthur, Prince of Wales marry
1502
  • April 2, 1502 - Death of Prince Arthur
  • A papal dispensation obtained to enable Henry to marry the wife (Catherine of Aragon) of his brother Arthur
1503 June 25, 1503 - Catherine of Aragon was betrothed to Henry

1509 / 11 The Mary Rose was built in 1509 / 1511 as the first English gunship
1511 / 12 Henry VIII established Deptford and Woolwich as the Royal Dockyards
1513 Catherine of Aragon ruled as regent whilst Henry was campaigning in France
1513 Battle of Flodden English victory over Scotland
1514 Beginning of the wars with France and Scotland
1516 Mary the first daughter of King Henry VIII and Queen Catherine was born in Greenwich. She later became Queen Mary I aka "Bloody Mary" (1516 - 1558)
1517 The Protestant Reformation begins when Martin Luther nails his "95 Theses" against the Catholic practice of selling indulgences, on the church door at Wittenberg
1517 The end of the wars with France and Scotland
1518 King Henry VIII started his affair with Elizabeth Blount ( 1500-1539) known as Bessie Blount
1519 June 1519 - Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount gives birth to Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond the illegitimate son of King Henry VIII
1520 1520 - The Field of Cloth of Gold - King Francois I of France meets King Henry VIII but fails to gain his support against the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V
1520 Establishment of a short-lived alliance between Henry VIII and Francis I of France
1521 King Henry VIII receives the title "Defender of the Faith" from
Pope Leo X for his opposition to Martin Luther and the reformation
1522 England invades France
1523 England abandons attempted French invasion
1525 King Henry VIII has a brief affair with Mary Boleyn, the sister of Anne Boleyn - lady in waiting to Catherine of Aragon
1526
  • March 4 1526 - Mary Boleyn gave birth to a son, called Henry - he was widely assumed to be the son of King Henry VIII although not acknowledged as such
  • King Henry VIII becomes totally obsessed Anne Boleyn with whom he falls madly in love
1529 King Henry VIII dismisses Lord Chancellor Thomas Wolsey for failing to obtain the Pope's consent to his divorce from Catherine of Aragon
1532 Anne Boleyn becomes pregnant

1533
  • January 25th 1533 Henry marries Anne Boleyn and is excommunicated by Pope Clement VII
  • Elizabeth , the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn, is born on 7 September 1533. She later becomes Queen Elizabeth I
1533 The Act of Appeals aided the constitutional development of England
1534 March 23, 1534, Pope Clement VII declared that the marriage of Henry and Katherine of Aragon had indeed been valid.

March 30, Parliament passed the Act of Succession which granted legitimate succession to the throne to the children of Henry and Anne Boleyn and negated the same to any children of Henry and Katherine of Aragon. Opposition to the Act constituted high treason.

King Henry VIII breaks with the Church in Rome and Parliament passes the Act of Supremacy on 3 November 1534, confirming King Henry VIII as Supreme head of the Church of England.

1535 Sir Thomas Moore and Bishop Fisher of Rochester are executed for refusing to acknowledge King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England

King Henry VIII badly injures his leg in a jousting accident

1536
  • 1536 January 7 - Queen Catherine of Aragon dies at Kimbolton Castle
  • May 2nd 1536 Queen Anne Boleyn is arrested and taken to the Tower of London
  • May 15th 1536 Queen Anne Boleyn tried for treason, adultery and incest in the Great Hall of the Tower of London
  • May 19th 1536 Anne Boleyn executed on Tower Hill. Anne's body and head were buried in an unmarked grave in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula
  • Within 24 hours of Anne Boleyn's execution, Jane Seymour and King Henry VIII are formally betrothed
  • On the 30th of May 1536 King Henry and Jane Seymour are married
  • The Dissolution of monasteries in England begins
  • Wales is incorporated into England
1537
  • Jane Seymour dies after the premature birth of a son, the future King Edward VI
  • Princess Elizabeth and Princess Mary, the daughters of Henry are declared bastards

  • Henry VIII marries Anne of Cleves but the marriage is annulled
  • July 28th 1540 - 49 year old Henry marries 19 year old Catherine Howard
1540's Henry VIII created a great chain of coastal fortresses to defend England against the threat of invasion
1541 Henry VIII was accorded the title King of Ireland by the Irish Parliament
1542
  • 13th February 1542 - Catherine Howard is executed for adultery
1542 Warfare renewed between France and Scotland
1543
  • 12th July 1543 - Henry marries Catherine Parr
1545 / 6 French landings on the English coast
1547
  • King Henry VIII dies 28 January 1547 at Palace of Whitehall
  • He was buried at Windsor next to Jane Seymour
